This is a brilliant, bold and trail-blazing novel that would have made it into the cannon of all time greats had the author not rushed the ending. This book is the most salient example of how a character can drive a book. The way the author melds introspection, prose and drama is brilliant. The characterisation is also flawless, especially that of the sapphic Mrs. Danvers. This book has all the mechanics of a memorable thriller. Pacing, characterisation and suspense. First Line: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."
I'm on a good run with the classics. This is another one that lived up to its reputation.
The main narrator frustrated me through most of the book, though. I couldn't believe how much she let the servants run the house and determine her routine. I wanted to scream at her "You're the mistress of the house! You can do whatever you damned well feel like and be in any room you damned well want!".
