This book gave me an insight into what it may have been like during occupied France during the early years of the Second World War. This book does quite a job of pulling together several story strands. This is not a book for those who want a military tale but shows instead how the civilians dealt with their circumstances. The ambivalence of many of the French is fairly convincing. This book never presented any surprises, but a plot twist would not have been convincing.

I liked this book, but thought that Resistance, by Agnes Humbert was a much better book. Obviously need to keep in mind that this book was never finished, but it is hard becuase the lack of ending for the majority of the characters is what bothers me most. We are introduced to like a dozen characters in the first section, but the last half of the book only focuses on like 3 of them. What happened with the others? Why were they included at all? This is an unfinished novel - only 3 parts were written - by Irene Nemirovsky. Unfortunately she died in a concentration camp. She wanted this to be like something Tolstoy would have written. It takes place at the onset of the German occupation of France. I liked this, but when I chose this as our bookclub book, it had mixed reviews by my group. It did make for a great and lively discussion so I would say it was a great choice!
