I have tried for a couple of years to watch the film version(s) of this at Christmas, but have never succeeded more than ten/fifteen minutes through boredom, so I wasn’t sure how I would get on with the book. I’d always wanted to read it and finally mind up my mind to. I thought it very well written and had no trouble getting into the story, unlike the films which was a good to find!

Though this book might not be perfect, it is the perfect Christmas book. It conjures up a Victorian Christmas that many would love to experience and becomes almost a self-parody, which I think is the novel’s redeeming feature. The characters are not complex but there is as charm to the novel that film and TV adaptations struggle to acquire. The critic in me wants to rob it of its 5th star for lack of depth, but the child in me loves the Christmas it portrays.

Pretty much followed the numerous movies made based on the story, but still good to get the actual book read once.
