An absolute masterpiece. I don't think there are many books better than this one in existence. It was interesting to see that McCarthy didn't add 'The Judge' to the manuscript until a much later revision. I can't imagine the book without him. ...more

Where do I even begin? Was this a "western"? Was this "modern literature"? I have no idea. I am not sure it can be classified under any "type". While reading this I missed the desert I grew up in.I have walked on those rocks, in that sand,climbed those scraggy hills,and soaked in the desert hot springs. This is one of the most beautiful and most horrific books I have ever read. At points all I could do was read one chapter at a time. By the end I could not put it down. Should you read this? Yes, the language is absolutely beautiful - almost overpoweringly so at times. And yet... nothing really grabbed me; I didn't care about any of it and so it was very much like reading a books of poems - read a bit, then put it down, then a bit more (lovely phrasing there, great imagery) and then down again.
