This book takes surgery to the ultimate extreme. The reader starts out on a boat following a man who for the most part goes by Prendick. The story starts to get interesting when Prendick gets on a boat and meets the strange character of Montgomery. He is stranded so when he gets to opportunity to go to the island Montgomery is going to he takes his chance there even though the whole situation seems a little sketchy. When on the island he meets Dr. Moreau. Prendick is still not sure why Montgomery brought a multitude of animals to the island. Soon enough he finds out. After a few nights of being there Prendick is still in the dark as to what happens on this mysterious island. But one night Prendick is frightened by the noises of torure coming from behind a locked door. Frightened, Prendick runs off into the jungle type environment that surrounds this home on the island. When on his little adventure, he encounters a "person." This person is unmistakenly ugly and is drinking water while on all fours. Prendick is scared by this and runs off and eventuallly gets attacked by another monster type human. When rescued by Montgomery and Moreau, he then goes suicidal. He escapes and threatens to drown himself because he thinks that Moreau is taking humans and turning them into these beasts. Once Moreau and Montgomery convince him to not drown himself, they explain what they do on the island. Turns out Moreau practices vivisection. Vivisection, for those of you who don't know, is the practice of performing operations on live animals for the purpose of scientific research. Moreau's type of vivisection that he does is taking animals and basically making them human. They look like ugly humans, they can talk, and can be trained to do alot of things. Prendick is astonished by this and doesn't really know what to do. As you follow him through his journey you have to wonder, "who would do this?"
