I've always been interested in reading this legendary book, just not 450-pages interested, so I was pleased when my book club selected it and I was "required" to read it. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the end, I was much less pleased. I found the book's much-vaunted humor to be tiresome in the extreme, the characters far too cartoonish for me to care when bad things happen, and the entire enterprise to be about twice as long as necessary. Such an amazing book. So hilarious and so disturbing at the same time.
Heller does deadpan, dark humor better than any writer of books or films I have encountered.
This book draws attentions to the absurdity and horrors of war through what appear to be ridiculous, over-the-top situations and characters; but when you look a little closer, they're not far from the truth. Recently read a review about how this was one of the most over-rated books of the 20th century. I tried to finish the review but decided it was bunk. It's a very good book/ commentary on the insanity of war and bureaucracy.
