This story reveals itself slowly within a beautifully described atmosphere.

This book came highly recommended when I mentioned my enjoyment of Jane Eyre. I can see why. In some aspects the stories are parallel - young, naive woman from a lower class joins an older man in his imposing British home, weird things happen. This story was gripping but not in the way I had expected of something described as a "thriller." Still, I found it surprisingly haunting. I'm not surprised Hitchcock made it into a movie. ...more
