Why are we reading “Crater” by Homer Hickam?
I’m excited. As far as I know, this is the first book – ever – with a Lunar Elevator being used as the primary transportation system on and off the Moon. For that reason alone, this bumps straight to the top of my ‘to read’ pile.
I’ve read lots and lots of books featuring Earth’s Terrestrial Space Elevator. Some are good, some are not. Some are technically accurate, most are not. There is a solid dividing line between “old” versions of the Elevator - Think Pearson + Clarke, Sheffield + Robinson and “new” versions based on the NASA + LiftPort research. Lately there have been more and more Elevator stories with the revised, technically accurate versions that were promoted through LiftPort.
But I’ve never seen a Lunar Elevator in a story before.
I think we should dive in!
