Disappointing as it had some great reviews and I struggled to finish it. I quite liked the descriptions of New Orleans and it was interesting to get an insight into the way black people were treated. There were some mildly amusing sections about Mrs Reilly and her friends and the bits in the Night of Joy but I found myself completely switching off for most of the book. I read this a few years back for bookclub. I didn't appreciate it the first time around, but if you actually step back and take the time to appreciate the humour it is a hilarious book (especially when your husband has also read it and is rolling around on the floor crying with laughter). Some of the highlights are just the general descriptions of Ignatius and his hunting cap/fine physique, the letter he writes to his female friend who is hosting a feminist lecture, the runner beans growing over
