This was my third re- read. I am puzzled as to why people say it is a romantic tale.
For me, it is a tale of woe.
A tale;
Of vengeance.
Of jealousy.
Of despair.
Of obsession.
But not of love, love is too simple, pure and unselfish for this tale!

I don't understand the critics who disliked this book because the characters are rather unlikable. badly written characters or flat characters are one thing, characters who invoke an emotion in you, even disgust or anger, are good characters.
The book feels so complete. Watching Heathcliff transform from a little vulnerable child to a villain worthy of a Faulkner novel is beautiful and horrifying. The academic in me loved picking apart the use of race and expectations of race in the novel and th ...more
