I really enjoyed this. I have officially abandoned my Michael Pollan hater stance. I misunderstood him. I might even give Botany of Desire another chance.

Now I will ramble:

I'm a little jealous that he gets to write these glorified stunt books that are so appealingly nerdy.

Now I'm going to start my starter...it's time to take my bread baking to the next level...

I don't think I'll be roasting any whole pigs, though. However, listening to that part of the book did take me down memory lane to summer

Some really interesting information about cultural evolution of specific kinds of cooking (and some neat science/kitchen chemistry in there too). But some of his cooking stories were more detailed than even I had interest in.

Just ok. Too overwrought for me. As the book went on I liked it better - the sections on bread (altho I think the book 52 Loaves by William Alexander is so much better than this one if you are interested in bread baking) and fermenting were interesting, and the one about cooking in a pot was ok, but I didn't like the barbeque section at all. Way too much "big strong men like to cook over fire" and fretting as to the deeper meaning it might hold. I don't feel like I wasted my time reading it, exa ...more

I really enjoyed this. I think we are in a period of Pollan backlash - the book is better than the reviews would have you believe.
