What a comprehensive look at how the processed food giants (e.g., Kraft, Philip Morris, etc.) hook us on their super-processed products. For instance, "as it turns out, the manufacturers of processed foods have been creating a desire for salt where none existed before" (pg. 279). . .Babies love sugar the instant they are born . . .But babies do NOT like salt" (ibid). We have to be taught to like it. Why should we fall for that?

I think I basically knew most of the nutritional information here (short version: too much sugar, fat, and salt is bad for us, processed foods contain too much of them, and processed foods also are specifically engineered to encourage us to eat too much). What did strike me was the similarities between the effect of sugar on our physiology and brain, and that of addictive drugs (recently promoted in my consciousness by Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America's Greatest Tragedy).
