I usually hate reading short story collections, but I couldn't ignore all the hype around this one, and I'm glad I've read it. Semplica Girl Diaries, Home, and Puppy were my favorites (although SG Diaries really tested my patience until I just relaxed and let him tell the story). I appreciate how Saunders examines class structure and anxieties through character and voice. Standpoint theory conveyed through fiction. Excellent writing as always from Saunders. Interesting and varied characters. However, many of the stories were so dark and unpleasant that I really can't recommend it.

Named the best book of 2013 in early January by NY Times Magazine...high praise and seemingly impossible to live up to? Well, it certainly made me want to read it and I really enjoyed the book. Really, I would rate 4.5 stars. The first and last stories were my favorites. Saunders does an AMAZING job writing the interior voices in our minds. Hope to read more by him.
