I first read this book the year of its publication, but given the attention that Barack Obama has given it, I decided to reread it. Still loved it. There are so many interpretations of Lincoln that it seems impossible that another interpretation could be fitted on the shelves, but Goodwin's view of Lincoln is revealing. Wrestling the Republican nomination for President from candidates who were more qualified than he, Lincoln went on to include many of his political rivals in his Cabinet. This pr

If I could give one book a sixth star, this would be it. I have no words to accurately describe the herculean task of historical research, analysis and narrative that Doris Kearns Goodwin herein accomplishes. Every American knows just how awesome a man and Abraham Lincoln was, but Goodwin's Team of Rivals manages to simultaneously elevate the man to new impossible heights and ground that estimation in cross-referenced citations that leave all doubt about the veracity of such assertions of his ma

This is one of the best books I've ever read. I was drawn to it after seeing Doris Kearns Goodwin on the Colbert Report as well as hearing Barack Obama's comments about Lincoln and how much he valued the book. I learned so much about the personal stories of key figures in the civil war especially the "behind the scenes" of campaigning and preparing for war.

wonderful background on Lincoln's leadership style-- many parallels to what Obama is doing now. Also very deep history of Civil War.
Worth reading-- don't miss it! ...more

Another Kearns-Goodwin masterpiece! I can 'see' history through her writing.
