Decent characters. I was surprised to find Gen as the main character, as he's not mentioned on the cover. I feel that the ending was left a little too open. What happened to the other survivors? How were they able, or not, to return to their lives? I also wonder why the author chose to take the book in such a low key direction. It could have been a very fast paced book, but it was a character study instead.

This is a really beautiful book displaying human relationships and humanity under violent and strained circumstances. The background and theme of opera and music adds a melancholy air to the doomed future of people who began at odds but become closer and closer.
Although I felt the book was difficult to get into, it is definitely worth it in the end. A beautiful story about love, music, and the communication of opera between nationalities.
