I'm the Education Coordinator for a Volunteer Literacy Program and I have used this book numerous times to help adults learn to read. One student had only been to school one day in his life--he was in his 50s at the time--and he began reading with Green Eggs and Ham. Our second book was Cat in the Hat. He read about ten pages of Cat and in the Hat, stopped, looked at me and said, "This is good, but it's no Green Eggs and Ham." I can't imagine a higher recommendation than that.

Ok, so I feel kind of lame even adding this to my bookshelf as I have omitted MANY of the books from my childhood, especially the Babysitter's Club, Goosebumps, Boxcar Children, etc. BUT this was the first book I could "read" or at least had memorized, and I would "read" it to my parents. You have to appreciate Dr. Seuss!
