I loved this book about the most remote and mysterious branch of the federal government. Jeffrey Toobin has written a highly readable, highly informative book about the interworkings of the court and the political environment in which justices are selected, confirmed, and work. The sketches of the justices are fascinating. Who knew that when Harriet Miers withdrew her name from Senate consideration that she would have most likely been confirmed? Jeffery Toobin’s The Nine is a fantastic book. Not too long and well written. Without overwhelming those of us who are not lawyers or SCOTUS watchers, Toobin conveyed the importance of the work the Justices do. The reader learns about the Justices, their personalities, and their beliefs. Also, as Toobin book focuses mostly on the 1990s and 2000s, one learns a lot about the important Supreme Court cases during those two decades. I don't read much non-fiction, but decided to give this one a try on the recommendation of my teen-aged daughter. Very interesting recent history of the Supreme Court with lots of insights into the personalities of recent justices. Toobin's liberal bias definitely shows, but did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. Particularly enjoyed the parts about Clarence Thomas; what a walking contradiction that man is.
