A good history of Islam and a call for reformation. Does not really make the case that Islam as it exists today is compatible with secular democracy, only argues that Islamic democracy is possible, and the claim is made that democracies inevitably secularize over time. While this latter portion of the book is questionable, the historical chapters are very good.

I saw the author on the Daily Show, and he seemed like a very reasonable person and intelligent person. I bought the book out of curiosity about Islam but also because he impressed me. I'm glad that I did because it was a great book and a very balanced introduction to Islam.
