It is rare that the first paragraph of a nonfiction book is riveting enough to draw you in, and yet Dr. Hart's introduction immediately captured my attention. As it continued, I realized to my disappointment that it was much more memoir than it was scientific discourse or social science critique, although that is certainly in there. I know less now than I did when I started the book, and that it's a good thing. I no longer "know" that meth is particularly destructive to the brain. (Studies with that conclusion, were on animals under much higher doses than humans use.) Many of the things we "know" about the dangers of drugs simply are not borne out by facts.
