[08/06/2019 Update]: Toni Morrison has died and while I engage in my usual requiem-ritual of listening to Al Green's Take Me To The River, I immediately came back to my experience reading this book. Though she's dead what's important is that we still have her books, her words, and the site of her memory. I read this book back in 2015 and she immediately became an old friend. I tell you I never re-read anything. And yet I just re-read this book at the suggestion of a Booktopia friend. There is no dispute- the author is genius on a page. I’m Sure I missed some of the millions of allusions - the Bible, myth, history - all packed in here and turned on a thread of characters, plot and place. Macon Dead makes every effort to fly.
I honestly don't remember that I read this book before (although I'm thinking it may have been a listen).
It's not always easy to read. Some days I couldn't wait to pick it up; other days it was going to be a chore. I kept wondering, "What am I missing or misunderstanding?" Yet, I kept on. I'm glad I read it (again) and will try additional Toni Morrison books.
