I never read this as a teen, I can't imagine my school even trying to assign this! The horror! I don't know how I would have reacted to it as a young person. As an adult, I find it devasting and beautifully written, even as it turns my stomach. I find it interesting that Morrison chose to label the sections as seasons even though the book is not told in chronological order. 3.5 stars. Morrison is a powerful writer, but this is one of the most depressing books I've ever read. There is no happiness in this book.
