I heard the author on a podcast and he seemed very funny and pithy. Unfortunately, that half hour was the highlight reel for the book, which is otherwise filled with lots of details about his unhappy life and his painful embrace of meditation. Different people have different personalities and his personal story will not be relevant for everyone. For example, one of his epiphanies was how much it decreased his stress to expand his circle of concern beyond himself: I can see how this would be help

To me, this seemed more a memoir than a self-help book. Harris was fortunate to become a network reporter for ABC before he turned 30. So, he "made it" but now he had to "keep it." Evidently this proved too stressful which he realized when he had a panic attack on the air.
The bulk of the book explains his journey through drugs, Echart Tolle, and Buddism to find something that helped him deal with the stresses in his life.

Update: Even better the 2nd time around (and about 3 years later).
Is it useful?
Yes, this book is a valuable read for almost anyone who has any worry genes, insomnia, or low self-confidence. It's a must for anyone who has all of those and more. It's witty, handles the inevitable skepticism well, and provides SCIENTIFIC facts and data to support the stated benefits of meditation and mindfulness.
Might be worth adding to your personal library and can definitely make for a good literary gift.

There is so much in this book I could relate to personally. It's written by a type-A journalist who is dry skeptical. He path to discovering meditation somewhat mirrors mine and I thoroughly enjoyed his journey. It does change his life, as it has changed mine. I have often said "I wish I had been meditating when I was still working as a journalist, it would have changed so much!" Better late than never.

This resonated with me. The telling of his journey to find meditation was honest, funny and full of great information. There is good practical advice at the end, and he really helps one understand how meditation can be applied to a normal life and what it can mean. I look forward to putting it all into practice!
