Un-put-downable (is that a word). And the main reason it's that way is the Kolbert just tells the story, without sugar-coating anything or wrapping everything up with an "it's all going to be ok!" chapter - which isn't to say that it isn't written without moments of humor or grace, but that it tells the truth.

It seems a little strange to call a book beautiful when the topic is whether or not we are causing a dramatic reduction in the diversity of life on this planet but this book is. The author explains the previous five extinctions and what scientists think caused them (i.e. #5 the disappearance of dinosaurs due to an asteroid.) What an eye-opening book. Elizabeth Kolbert makes the science so approachable. This powerful book explains how humans will be solely responsible for the sixth mass extinction on our planet. The section on ocean acidification was particularly sobering. Please read this book!
