Un-put-downable (is that a word). And the main reason it's that way is the Kolbert just tells the story, without sugar-coating anything or wrapping everything up with an "it's all going to be ok!" chapter - which isn't to say that it isn't written without moments of humor or grace, but that it tells the truth.

It seems a little strange to call a book beautiful when the topic is whether or not we are causing a dramatic reduction in the diversity of life on this planet but this book is. The author explains the previous five extinctions and what scientists think caused them (i.e. #5 the disappearance of dinosaurs due to an asteroid.)
