Having never read any of Elizabeth Gilbert's work, I picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend.
The central character is a Renaissance woman who seeks to learn all she can about our world. As a life-long learner myself, the premise of the book is good enough to pique my interest.
Ms. Gilbert's character development in this sweeping historical novel set during the 18th and 19th centuries, however, was truly delicious.

This historical fiction novel is a really long journey with fantastic writing, but you must be in it for the long haul. I wondered, about halfway through, if I was going to regret my commitment to finish. I always enjoy Gilbert's writing, but I don't always find her stories engaging, as I did not with City of Girls.
