This book does not have a happy ending in any sense, but it is an enthralling read. The historical setting of a prison in England on the brink of WWII feels wholly authentic. The two MC's are unusual, complex and captured my interest from the first moment. Gabriel managed to be a sympathetic character even through events that should have made me as a reader turn against him. The ability to engage the reader to this extent with this man is an amazing achievement for author S. A. Reid.

This book is completely worthy of an exceptional review. It touched me so deeply and poignantly though, that I'm having trouble with getting my feelings on the page. Bear with me. Maybe a reread will help me see more clearly.

I loved every bit of this, so very good… completely took me by surprise… it’s an historical prison romance; it is violent, hopeful, bittersweet. And so well rendered.
Set in early 20th century England, Gabriel and Joey’s story is told with the distinct voice of the time, straight-forward and dispassionate. The two men, incarcerated in a dismal prison, a post-Victorian hell-hole, become unlikely allies against all odds as they learn to protect each other. It is tense without angst, heart breaking ...more

What a great story. Aside from the initial "bad" scene, and a few gory moments here and there, it was a beautiful story. I am not a huge fan of historical books, and I'm saddened to say that I consider a book of this time period as historical. Nevertheless, this was so well written that I was sucked right into the lives of Gabe and Joey. With Gabe being in for two life sentences, I had a hard time believing this could end well right from the get go. I loved these two together though and was root

Probably a 3.5. I did like Gabe and Joey. I liked that as tough as Gabe was, he still had a sensitive side and you could see, through words and actions, the connection that he had with Joey. I did keep thinking about And So Is Love throughout the whole book. I liked that one better than this because I felt more for the characters.

I didn't review this when I originally read this, as I sucked back them, but I accept that.
Still, it's stuck with me, and I still remember the emotions it made me feel. And I read it at least a couple years ago, so that's something quite remarkable.
So, this was me when reading it, I'm pretty sure:

So anyone who wants a big heart breaker? Look no further. You've got it.

Importing my review from the S.A. Reid edition: Gabriel is top dog at a men's prison in the 1930s, and Joey is a new inmate. Gabriel is immediately attracted to Joey and, because of Joey's crime, he feels justified in brutally raping Joey in the showers. When Joey gets back from his stay in the infirmary (where he had to get stitches!) he finds out that Gabriel has arranged to become Joey's cellmate. It's a harsh beginning and the brutality is not downplayed. Joey really hates Gabriel, but he le

This is a moving read despite the superficial and largely glamorising way with which it approaches its subject.
