3.75* A really great start to a series I'm excited to continue. I love the characters. I love the strength of body and spirit of our main character and I find my self attracted to both Dorian and Chaol. Can't wait to see where this story goes.

I was very intrigued by the premise of this book. It didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I was invested enough in the characters and the world to buy the sequel. The writing was spotty -- sometimes beautiful but other times artless and almost amateurish. Then I read that the author started writing this book when she was in high school and that made sense to me.

This was a fun enough book, but it was more fluff than tough. I wanted less courtly castle stuff and more action scenes. The magic and world building were fun. I hope to see more about the fantasy world in the next book. Oh, and I really hope it's Choal and not Dorian...
