How do I even begin? This is a book that defies my expectations to become something far surpassing idiocy--it borders on insanity.
In the first two books, our heroine, Nora, discovers that (gasp) angels exist and she is, in fact, a descendant of a Nephilim (half angel, half human). Nora accepts this in stride, mainly because she finds herself basking in the glory of one dapper "young" male fallen angel. Patch (yes, that's his name) is dark and mysterious and though he is rarely honest, nice or a How do I even begin? Nora accepts this in stride, mainly because she finds herself basking in the glory of one dapper "young" male fallen angel. Patch (yes, that's his name) is dark and mysterious and though he is rarely honest, nice or amusing and has eyes that resemble chunks of coal, Nora can't help but become infatuated with him and they spend a lot of scenes making out. Did I mention that Patch can't feel touch so I'm not even clear how the whole kissing cardboard thing works?
The first two books are silly, but to be honest, they're fun, mindless reading material that I can enjoy for the sake of reading, not in some abstract way that one needs to feel that they are consuming "art" and something deep and thought-provoking. This third book... I barely have the words for it. Mindless? That's not descriptive enough. Absurd? Too kind. Laughable? Getting closer. A travesty? Almost there.
I'm not going to even get into the story set-up that makes no sense or the contrived plot devices which are too crazy to even talk about. I have one particular area of malcontent that I would like to dwell on. Let me begin by stating that I consider myself a bit of a nerd when it comes to the fantasy/sci-fi genre. I love a good fantasy novel and you want to have a two-hour discussion about vamps, zombies, trolls, hobbits, wizards, dragons? Go for it. I'm your girl. I have the ability to suspend belief in the laws of this universe and accept almost any bizarre, magical, spiritual twist an author wants to throw at me. I'm primed for it! I love believing in the unbelievable for the length of a book or a movie. I suck it in. But I'm not a fucking idiot. Fitzpatrick has confused fantasy lovers with mental patients that are slow on the uptake. She created a world in the first book and then has slowly been chipping away at it's plausibility ever since. The worst offense is that it seems that she's just scraping the bottom of the barrel for twists and turns and when she writes them and realizes that they make no sense whatsoever, she says that the characters have either 1) been "mind-tricked", or 2) that the situation involves "Devil-craft". Fitzpatrick thinks that these two terms are pretty much a panacea to any and all lingering questions that her readers may have. Oh, Nora stubbed her toe? Devil-craft. Her mother and best friend are acting like two completely different humans? Mind-tricked. The movie theater you're in was taken over by aliens? Your dog suddenly spouts antenna and can communicate with hell? Devil-craft. Nora decides in the middle of a complete, fucking disaster to go shopping with her sworn enemy for homecoming dress? Mind-tricked. Actually, no. Nora just really decided to do go dress shopping in the middle of her life falling apart because, ya know, it was homecoming and all and who cares about a war between heaven and earth when you could be worrying about sparkly clothes and high heels and a disco ball in the school gym.
My question is, does Fitzpatrick think that we, the readers, have been "mind-tricked"? If I wasn't so annoyed, I would be offended that she thinks we're so stupid.
In a way, I'm sort of looking forward to the fourth book. Not because I care about the story at this point, but it's like rubbernecking at an accident scene. I WANT to see how how bad this is going to get.

Theres no words for how AMAZING this book is. I devoured it in a matter of hours. Seriously, i was on the edge of my bed reading so fast and so hard because i cant read faster or hard enough.
Patch & nora's love is being put to the test, can their love break through amnesia? Hell yeah! ...more
