Whenever I said that I was reading Vampire Academy I encountered mixed reactions. Abhorrence and excitement. The first group of people were shocked that I would stoop low enough to read one of those "vampire books." The other group had either read the series or had heard good things about it and were eager for my take on the novels. Here's what it is.

I'm at a loss as to why this book has such high ratings. The vampire side was pretty interesting concept. I liked the whole different types of vampires idea. I couldn't stand the characters. My main issue was with the heroine. Does she have any redeeming qualities? Ok, so she wasn't like a lot of ya heroines who just fall and cry and expect handsome boy 1 or 2 to come rescue her. Not your average vampire novel. I appreciated the effort to build in the living vs. undead vampire clans and Rose's role as a guardian. The entire system was pretty cool, though I'm not sure I got all of the specifics down on how they mate and function as a society. Still, I liked Rose and Lissa's bond, and the star crossed lover aspect to Rose's feelings for Dimitri. I'm curious to see where the series goes from here!
