Whenever I said that I was reading Vampire Academy I encountered mixed reactions. Abhorrence and excitement. The first group of people were shocked that I would stoop low enough to read one of those "vampire books." The other group had either read the series or had heard good things about it and were eager for my take on the novels. Here's what it is.

Really hate I waited so long to read this one. Loved it! I love when an author writes characters you actually care about. Usually there is a character that is just so annoying, selfish or juvenile, that I end up hating them. These characters all had back stories, thankfully described quite well, that made you understand and even empathize with their bad behavior. I love this book and can't wait to get the rest in this series. I also can't wait until they make this series into movies, which I think would be much better than the Twilight Saga. Rose is a Dhampir and her best friend Lissa is a Moroi princess. Lissa is a vampire with little fangs and huge magical talents. She can heal and she can use compulsion. Rose feels Lissa's emotions. They live at the Vampire Academy where Rose is taught to be a guardian. The Dhampir are part human and are trained to pr

I have been reading more young adult books lately, as sort of my quick enjoyment during the semesters of grad school.
Rose and Lissa have been friends all of their lives. Their bond of friendship takes on new meaning after an accident that takes Lissa's family.
Lissa is a member of a Royal family and Rose is her guardian. Being a guardian is tremendous responsibility for a 17 yr old, but Rose grows into the role with a new understanding of what it takes. Lissa is trying to live up to the expectat ...more

Not your average vampire novel. I appreciated the effort to build in the living vs. undead vampire clans and Rose's role as a guardian. The entire system was pretty cool, though I'm not sure I got all of the specifics down on how they mate and function as a society. Still, I liked Rose and Lissa's bond, and the star crossed lover aspect to Rose's feelings for Dimitri. I'm curious to see where the series goes from here!
