I am so conflicted about this book. The first half was 4.5 stars for me. It was interesting, the world, the characters, the cultures. It was brutal but didn't feel explicit, I loved the female friendships we got. And then somewhere after the halfway point it started to lose me. All of the reveals were so predictable to me, the dialogue started to feel clunky and cliché and a little cringey. Shelves: favorites, family, betrayal, friendship

This book is indeed an epic with a twist I never saw coming. Memorable characters; both good and bad, relevant thematic ideas of love, family and betrayal. There were even anti-heroes that I never saw coming. Mostly, I really appreciated the cultural reference to food, tribal markings and other symbolic ideas. So many scenes about love and acceptance resonate so strongly with me that I had to put my book away and return to it when I was in a better place emotionally and mentally. The power and b ...more
