What a way to ensnare someone. Those two sentences were all it took for me to know that I would definitely be reading this book. Those two sentences sparked such a riot inside me and I was immediately hungry for more.

This book is a brilliant reimagining mashup of Little Red Riding Hood and Beauty and the Beast. I found elements from both fairytales in this book and I was delighted with the nuanced touches that the author used with regard to them. I cannot deny the clever and unique premise that this story exhibits. I was truly enraptured and exhilarated by the ideas in the story and the original and compelling plot. Once I started reading it was a real effort to put it down to deal with real life. I felt like the writing style took a little too much time to get used to. It was kind of abrupt at times. The way that the information was presented in the story felt a little disjointed here and there. I definitely wasn't turned off by the narration but it didn't flow as evenly as I had hoped. The world-building was just remarkable. The way that the author describes the Wilderwood and the main character's experiences inside it was enchanting. You can feel yourself in the story in such a visceral way that seeps down into your bones.

The characters in this book were exceptional. The way that Whitten writes her characters makes the reader feel such an emotional link to them. It was so easy to connect with these characters and empathize with them. The two main characters had impressive character growth that really fueled the story along with the creative mysteries woven around them. The secondary characters also played important roles in this book. I really liked how each character had a personality that set them apart from other characters. Some of the secondary characters also have important journeys in this book that added depth to the overall story being told.

I loved the romance in this book. Red and Eammon are two people that have been thrown into the fire together by fate and the oaths of those that came before them. They may not have chosen to be tied to the Wilderwood but they chose each other. Red and Eammon were kindred spirits in a way that really warmed my heart. They were alike in ways that no one else would understand. Eammon was so romantic and he wasn't even trying to be. He was just kind and that was the kind of person he was deep down. He had a protective nature that I loved but I loved it when he finally let Red in and accepted that he doesn't always have to do everything alone. Their romance was such a beautiful journey.

Overall, this is a stunning and hauntingly dark fantasy debut that will mesmerize you. If you ever wanted the big bad wolf to meet his match then you'll want to read this. If the idea of a wicked and magical forest with monsters inside that demands blood gets your heart pumping then this is the book for you. If you would love for Beauty and the Beast to slay shadow monsters or you would fancy the suspense of blasphemous religious trickery then don't wait to pick this book up. I am so excited to read the next book in this series!

This was the first time reading a book by Hannah F. Whitten and I didn't have the best time reading this book. I'll give book 2 a try because a lot of authors seem to do better with the next book. I hope it explains what was happening in book one a little better. I'm hoping it will give me some clarity about the plot in book one.
