Readers will most be drawn by the protagonist, Nastya, and her fight to protect her family after they've been forced to leave all they know and exiled. With dire circumstances, danger at every turn, and blooming romance, it's a story that tugs on the heart as it builds to a climatic ending.

I really liked it! Strange to read a YA book that's a standalone, but it was wrapped up well with a satisfying ending.

I loved the way a totally unique magic system was wrapped up with historical pieces, and thought the author did an amazing job with all the characters.

Really enjoyed this. I love the history behind it, such a well researched book. It didn't feel like I was reading a fiction novel. This is the 2nd Nadine Brandes book I've read and I'm living for it. I personally love this so much more than Fawkes, which I enjoyed quite a lot. The Authors growth is quite amazing. ...more

I find this part of history fascinating. I thought Ms. Brandes did a wonderful job with this story. I found it informative and interesting. Ms. Brandes writes well. I just wish there were some of the family's negatives discussed, there are other sides to the story. ...more
