I'm so sad and disappointed. I really wanted to love this book. It looked like it was going to be interesting and past paced and twisted. But then it was just... not good. I don't want to be too harsh, because it seems like a lot of people really liked this and it got a bunch of hype. But it just fell flat for me. Worse than flat. It was predictable and boring. (view spoiler) I'm so sad and disappointed. I really wanted to love this book. It looked like it was going to be interesting and past paced and twisted. But then it was just... not good. I don't want to be too harsh, because it seems like a lot of people really liked this and it got a bunch of hype. But it just fell flat for me. Worse than flat. It was predictable and boring. (view spoiler)[ so the premise is that this is a weird fairytale land where Cinderella existed and now everyone has to live in accordance with these rules, like attending a ball and whatnot. But actually the world is terrible and all the men are abusers and women have no rights. Our protagonist is Sophia, who is in love with her friend Erin, but now they both have to go to the ball to get chosen by men to get married. Sophia is very 'rebellious' and 'different' and somehow she's the only one who wants to change things or protest what is happening. The king is a total dickhead and singles out one of their friends at the ball because she's poor (and as an aside- the world building makes NO SENSE. How do the regular poor people survive in this world? And they can't all go be single and work in the other town, because they are procreating. It just makes no sense, for so many reasons). After their friend is taken away, and then also this other dude Luke who is gay and wants to marry her to protect both of them, Sophia runs away, and is chased by guards and then meets this girl Constance, who's a rebel person kinda and the descendant of one of the evil step sisters. Afterward, they go on a trip to find the fairy god mother who can help them get rid of the evil king. It was here that things just went from bad to worse. The travel, they find the fairy god mother, a bunch of people die, Sophia's parents disown her, Erin is in an abusive marriage and is a bitch to Sophia. They briefly somehow raise Cinderella from the dead, they discover that the king is actually prince charming and is sucking life force from the girls, we find out that the fairy god mother is actually the kings father, shit happens, and Sophia eventually kills the king and they overthrow the kings system and somehow Constance becomes Queen and then everything end. Like WTF? This book was just not good. The characters were boring and undeveloped, the world made no sense, the twists were predictable. I don't know. I wanted badass girls and a zombie cinderella.
