DNFing for now. I just can't get into it. Fantastic concept, though. Hope to continue reading it in future.

This is a well-researched and well-written book, but at 475 pages it seems a trifle long for YA. Still, I enjoyed it. The lead character, Lada Dragwlya, and her younger brother Radu are abandoned by their Wallachian father as hostages, in essence, to the Ottoman court to ensure Wallachia's safety. Radu is the gentle one, while Lada is strong, angry, and vengeful. They both endure many travails before finding the one person who truly loves them -- the Ottoman prince Mehmed. It took me a really long time to finish listening to this one. Overall I enjoyed it well enough, but it never really hooked me in to the characters or the story. I guess we'll see what becomes of them though because I have a free copy of book 2 from the publishers, so I will read it and see if that one draws me in more.

Lada is described as a princess, but is so far from the literary and historical idea that this book caught me off guard. She’s also based of off Vlad the Impaler, who the author describes as this: “Vlad the Impaler was a national hero, a freedom fighter, a brilliant military mind. Or he was a deeply disturbed psycho-path, a vicious despot who murdered tens of thousands and literally sustained himself on their flesh.” The complexity of these characters and the environment that is forced on them i

When I started this book I hoped o would like because of its awesome summary. As I read on, the pace was slow as the author built a world and characters I came to care for quite a deal. the author took unexpected risks with sexuality and religion that not many YA books on this genre do. I am impressed and when the story ended, I immediately grabbed book 2, to get back to my "friends". Fantastic read, but for readers who bore easily when the action doesn't happen immediately... give it a chance.

This is the story of Vlad the Impaler but changed to a female named Lada. Lada is fierce and deadly. Some would even forget she's female at all. This was a good story and I enjoyed it for the most part. I took off one star because the middle got a little slow for me. Other than that this was really good and I can't wait to read the second one in this series.
