I will admit I am not the biggest fan of this author's first series for reasons she has grown beyond in Carve the Mark. the world building in this book can be a little heavy at times, but present. I never doubt that the author doesn't know where she's going or what she's talking about. I like the voice of Cyra as well as her character, strong but realistically flawed due to her power and upbringing and her view on her twisted brother. Mostly felt like I was reading for the sake of finishing the book, not because I was enjoying it.

In a word: slow.

Shelves: teens, audio, science-fiction, 2017-a-z-location

This didn't have very many likeable characters and some truly horrific things happen, but overall it was enjoyable enough. I wasn't particularly fond of how it ended, but that is the case with books in series on occassion. We'll see how this story continues. I rather liked Akos and grew to like Cyra too.
