Have you ever had one of those weeks when a couple of the books you're reading seem to be related even if they're from two different sections of the bookstore or library?

In the case of Every Fifteen Minutes and To All the Boys I've Loved, it's not a thematic similarity the books share, but instead my growing frustration with the main characters of each novel. This was a really fluffy book. It was light and cute, but it didn't really go anywhere. I think I missed the rising action to be honest. It was a wonderful distraction, but I just found it improbable and awkward. Lara Jean writes letters to all the boys she once had a crush on, and they accidentally get sent. This is humorous, a little out of the blue, and I was excited to see all her encounters with the other boys, but instead this turned into a weird quadrangle with her, her Actual Rating: 3.5

Not at all what I was expecting, and maybe just a little disappointing.

Lara Jean was a mild main character. She's nice, relatable. On the verge of boring. I was excited to see she was half-Korean, but it felt a little forced. I was also ready to see all the craziness and chaos having her letters sent out would bring...but instead she just spent all her time panicking because one of the letters would go to her sister's ex-boyfriend. Who she, incidentally, still has a crush on, and strangely enough he starts liking her back? Nah. Don't want that please. That's just awkward and weird. Bring in the other boys. (Go Lucas).

To cover the letter up, Lara Jean fakes being in a relationship with Peter Kavinsky. This is definitely NOT what I expected, but this might have been the best part. Because with Peter, the fake relationship doesn't seem so fake. Peter pops right off the page. He's a little frustrating, a little arrogant, and a little more than he seems on the outside. His relationship with Kitty made my heart melt. But still, it didn't seem like the book would head this way. It wasn't very...realistic. Peter's motives for a fake relationship were questionable.

But with all this "crushing" happening...where is the actual plot?? Is it just Lara Jean learning who she actually might like?? Is that it? Apparently. Nothing else really happens. It's just Lara Jean having one extended fight with her sister, her sister's ex-boyfriend, her fake-boyfriend Peter, and her younger sister. I guess it's a book about self-discovery, but even then Lara Jean isn't a very dynamic character. And the end was just anti-climactic. Cliff-hangers are fine with me, but not when they are purposeless. If more had happened during the actual novel, I might have been happier about the end.

I know I sound pretty cruel in this review. Truth be told, it wasn't a bad book - it just could have been better. There were so many interesting directions this could have gone, but it was too short and not nearly as touching as it could have been. Familial relationships were great, but overall it was a little empty. I'm sure there are people who absolutely loved it, but I cannot agree. If you are looking for a light read, something humorous, but ultimately not life changing, then this is the right book. I'll be waiting for the second book, but only because I hope there is something better coming. ...more

4.5* Loved this story and the Song sisters. They were waaay nicer to each other than me and my sisters. I was so NOT ready for this book to end. Glad there is another one.

It was cute!!!

Just plain cute!

I finish it in hours simply because it's an easy read and it does actually catch your attention. The way Jenny writes her characters is lighthearted but real. I enjoy the humor and references through Lara Jean's pov. Although it ended way too soon with no real answers on what will happen now, I can't wait to read the next one. ...more

One of the cutest Contemporary YA's I've ever read. Quick read that had me laughing out loud, crying, and cringing with embarrassment. The only reason why I haven't already devoured the next book is that I'm still waiting for it to become available at my local library. ...more

As with many people I read this because of the netflix movie. I have to say the movie was better to my mind. I did enjoy this and will read the others in the series.
