Stagioni meravigliose

Stagioni Diverse è probabilmente la raccolta di racconti più matura ed equilibrata di Stephen King, la dimostrazione che l’appellativo di Re dell’horror gli va eccessivamente stretto.
Non ci sono esseri soprannaturali, in questi quattro racconti dedicati ai quattro periodi dell’anno, né mondi fantastici (anche se…), e gli unici mostri di cui si parla sono quelli delle brutture dell’animo umano, della miseria e della solitudine.

Primavera:Rita Hayworth e la redenzione di Shawshank
Una lunga parabola sulla speranza che non muore mai anche se provano ad ucciderla in tutti i modi.
La storia di un uomo incarcerato ingiustamente che trova la sua via di fuga.

Estate: Un ragazzo sveglio
Un racconto di un amicizia malata tra un ragazzo sveglio e un vecchio ex-nazista nascosto. Due anime corrotte che si inseguono in un crescendo.

Different Seasons is considered one of King's best works and it was about time I finally read it!

I mostly agree with the positive reviews. The first story, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, was definitely my favourite. I loved Andy's character and how his story was told from Red's point of view. This way, there was an aura of mystery around him, he seemed more legend than man. There were so many epic scenes where I rooted so hard for him! I loved Andy's character and how his story was told from Red's point of view. This way, there was an aura of mystery around him, he seemed more legend than man. There were so many epic scenes where I rooted so hard for him! There was also a point where I thought (view spoiler). The ending was absolutely perfect.

The second story, Apt Pupil, was also my second favourite. It was one of the most disturbing and chilling stories I've ever read, but I also couldn't put it down. The story kept going places I didn't want it to go, right until the end I was hoping (view spoiler) The two main characters were equally despicable, but their characterization was solid and definitely memorable.

As for the third story, The Body, I have an unpopular opinion. Most readers consider it an excellent portrayal of childhood and loss of innocence, but personally I found it a little boring, and I didn't care for any of the characters. I also didn't like the stories inside the story. So, while it wasn't bad, for me it was just an average 3 stars read.

The last story, The Breathing Method, is considered the weakest of the collection, but I really enjoyed it. It wasn't as good as the first two, but it was still a great read. I loved the two levels of the story, the first set in the mysterious club, which I found a fascinating setting, and the second which is the story told by a member of the club, Dr. McCarron. Di King avevo già letto Shining, che però, a parte un po’ di normale inquietudine, non mi ha fatto paura né impressione e mi era piaciuto moltissimo; mi sono ritrovata, poi, a leggere questi racconti tutti d’un fiato: ho iniziato stanotte perché non riuscivo a prender sonno e poi non mi ci sono più staccata, solo una brevissima pausa fra un racconto e l’altro (e i racconti sono dei libri); mi è andata bene che oggi è domenica.
