Onestamente non mi aspettavo una saga familiare. O meglio, non so neanche io cosa mi aspettassi da questo libro. So che mi è piaciuto, coinvolto, mi sono anche commossa in alcuni punti. La nota dolente è la lunghezza. Ci sono pagine di troppo, disgressioni che non danno nulla alla trama e contraddizioni che potevano essere evitate. Una saga familiare che sa essere ironica, coinvolgente e ispirante, ma che a tratti si perde troppo nel dettaglio, lasciando che la narrazione si inceppi. Proprio per quel sacro principio espresso da Cechov (se in una storia compare una pistola, è necessario che spari) e ripreso dall'autore, tutti questi fronzoli non giovano al romanzo. Middlesex sarebbe stato assai più godibile se Eugenides si fosse attenuto a un concetto di essenzialità che invece troppo spesso ignora. Peccato.
