Frankenstein, ovvero il libro che Stephen King lasciò a metà la prima volta che cominciò a leggerlo («copia usata e non illustrata che avevo comprato a tredici anni per un quarto di dollaro.»)

Mi è piaciuto. Devo dire, però, che a differenza di Jekyll & Hyde (che adoro, un romanzo che secondo me non è invecchiato di un attimo), leggendo Frankenstein ho sentito un po’ di polvere: c’è qualche ripetizione, tormenti tiratissimi, un paio di passaggi un po’ forzati e sul finale si perde un po’. When I first read Frankenstein, in high school, I enjoyed the gothic aspect of it; on re-read, I was mostly impressed by its complex and modern characterization.
The creature is far from being a simple monster: it is impossible not to feel pity and sorrow for him, despite being appalled by his terrible actions. And Frankenstein, even though his misfortunes are great, is sometimes more despicable than his creature. Today villains are popular and they are much explored, but in Mary Shelley's time ...more

Diciamocela tutta: il problema non è tanto il romanzo di Shelley che, pur con le sue filosofie e astrattismi, rappresenta un punto di svolta nella narrativa fantastica, quanto l'aspettativa che uno ha quando si trova Frankenstein tra le mani. Immaginiamo un racconto dell'orrore, ci ritroviamo a leggere i piagnistei del "dottore". Tra l'altro, Victor, scienziato che riesce a creare dal nulla la vita, si rivela un personaggio straordinariamente poco intuitivo, trasformandosi nella bestiolina ammae ...more
