Wowza! What a fantastic book. I was vacillating about whether to give this a 4 or 5 as I entered the final chapters. But the ending...oh my such a great ending...makes this book a 5. Celeste Ng has incredible insight into the soul, and we can all learn from the strengths and flaws of the characters. We can especially learn not to be so judgmental toward those with different backgrounds and those who make different choices than we would.

I'm a sucker for a good suburban melodrama but some of the ideas feel a little after-the-fact and how-can-I-make-this-a-little-more-dramatic-without-drastically-altering-the-story.

The descriptions of making art were fantastic. I even liked reading some of the teenage angst. But, I'm frankly not interested in the suburban drama. I have about as much patience for it as Mia did. I do get the symbolism of the pieces Mia left for everyone. I wish the author had given the reader a little more credit and let us figure them out on our own - maybe even see them develop throughout the book, instead of a big reveal at the end.
