While this story was not plot driven, it was a remarkable read. I also read Tinkers, which was a similar concept-the musings of an elderly man nearing the end of his time on earth. However, I found the "ponderings" idea in Gilead much more developed and thought provoking. The prose was lyrical and the vocabulary superb. ...more

Gilead is an extended letter written by a small-town, Iowan pastor to his young son. The text, meandering and episodic, perfectly represents to the reader what it is intended to be. It is a dying man's life, "flashing before his eyes".

I battled through this book, wanting it to get better. There was a bit of redemption (with wine attached, I must admit) as tears were brought to my eyes 90% of the way through. The story-telling was fantastic. The soul-searching, Scripture analysis, and overall religious discussion just wasn't my cup of tea, and there was a lot of it. Overall, it was okay.
