Yet another take on zombies, but this one with a refreshing twist. Melanie is a brilliant girl with an inquiring mind, and she loves learning and her teacher. Of course Melanie and her fellow students are "Hungries", zombies, but they can talk and think, and have apparently human emotions. I loved the first part of this book as it explored Melanie's relationship with her compassionate teacher. They are in military facility in a post apocalyptic world, and the scientists are trying to find out why these children still have human like brain function, in contrast to the rest of the world with traditional brain dead zombies. The second part was a bit of a let down as it devolves into mostly an action show, leaving behind some fascinating questions about being human, but on the whole I enjoyed this different take on zombies.
