The Alcyemst has been on my to read list for a long time. My 12 year old son read it about a year ago and really liked it but I have never gotten around to reading it. I recently found an audio copy available for free download from our library so decided to give this book a try.

As I listened to this book I had a hard time with it. I couldn't decide if I liked it. It had elements that were intriguing but the characters were lacking in personality and passions. There was no character that I was really rooting for.
I'm hoping that the second book has a little more kick, some more personality. It just needs a little more of something that I didn't feel I was getting. The book was a combination of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson but it was lacking a Harry or a Percy or even a ...more

I was disappointed that even though this is part of a series, it didn't have more of a conclusion. It really just feels like you are reading part of a longer book.
The story line is quite clever bringing into reality mythology and turning on it's head the world as the humans in the story know it. It's really fun to think "what if" as they are forced too. It is also interesting on the level that the characters (besides the twins) are all based on real historical characters. ...more

This book had good balance.
There were some scenes from the good guys' pov, some from the bad guys', and some from the twins. There were enough new creatures and powers to be interesting without being overwhelming. The twins were not too dumb, and they had hobbies and interests.
The plot moved fast enough. The events were interesting.
It just did not have anything particularly unique or interesting. The writing style was bland; each character's pov sounded the same. ...more

I started reading this book with my kids book group. It was a really fun book to read. Little did I know how addicting the story line would be. There are currently 4 book out in this series. Who knows how many more there will be. Fun read even if it's written for kids.

Fun story, and fast. There were so many loose ends by the end of the book that reading the second seemed overwhelming. So... I won't.
