I really enjoyed this first book in Winspear's mystery series. Maisie Dobbs is a very intriguing and sympathetic heroine full of admirable traits.

At age 13, after her mother's death, her father sends her to be a servant in the home of a kindly aristocratic family. This is not your typically cozy mystery. Definitely more novel than mystery, Maisie Dobbs sounds fluffier than it really is. I was impressed at how Winspear was able with a few deft strokes to conjure up some real emotion in describing just a few of the horrors of The Great War. Enjoyed this book and am looking forward to continuing the series. I enjoyed the historical aspects as well as the fact that it was thoroughly clean. So refreshing!

Beautifully written, with two scenes that made me cry. I'm not much for mysteries, but this was a great one because of how deep the characters are. ...more

I really enjoyed this detective book, set during World War 1. An english version of the Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency. It was a fun read and I really recommend it.

A cozy little mystery, set in London and Kent, but I loved all the gems of advice on interpreting interpersonal and non-verbal communication, as well as empathy, as Masie reflected on Maurice’s teaching. I look forward to reading more of the series.
