A well-crafted, charming little story about friendship and growing up -- with just a touch of magic and mystery. This is a quick read that had me hooked right from the beginning and staying up late to learn the ending. I loved seeing the character growth in Miranda -- a few of her good decisions toward the end brought happy tears to my eyes. And there's even a nod to us bibliophiles; you can't help but love the way Miranda loves "her" book. Well-deserving winner of the Newbery. (SEPT 2012)

Quick read with an interesting premise. After reading the reviews, I was a little disappointed since it seemed more a journey of tween self-discovery than one of sci-fi mystery. Still I enjoyed it and like another reviewer said, I would've adored it as a tween. This is one I will set in my daughters' room hoping they will pick it up (the only way I can get them to read books I like). However despite what some reviews say, this is no "Wrinkle in Time". An arresting story with references to Madeleine L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time" in a style that reminds me of E.L. Konigsberg. Nicely done. Read L'Engle's book first if you haven't already. Doing so will add to your enjoyment of this one. ...more

Interesting and unusual storyline. interesting and appealing characters navigating the treacherous waters of 6th grade social life. mysterious and cryptic notes from an unknown writer. simultaneously real and fantastical.

Wow, what a book! I stayed up late to finish it. I loved it so much that I can't even think about what my next read will be. I will definitely be reading this to my fifth graders. I may have to bring in a clip of $25,000 Pyramid to build their schema! This book has so many wonderful points for discussion. I also plan to use it for a mentor text for teaching writing. ...more

2.5 stars. I set my expectations too high for this Newberry winner, and it was interesting but somewhat disappointing. I found the coming-of-age, science fiction time travel twist a strange combination. I did like how the main character had to deal with real problems and did the best she could, but I found the end wrapped up too easily and neatly.
