I love the unique way this book was written. The author writes in the first person describing her aunt's real experiences. It does a fantastic job of capturing the horrors of living in a ghetto in Poland during WWII from a child's perspective. The ghetto originally had 270,000+ people in it, and by the end of the war only 800 survivors were left--12 of which were children. This story is about one of the children survivors.

3.5 stars. It took me a little while to get into the style of this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. She really was able to write it in a poetic way, from a child's point of view. I love all things World War II, and had never heard of the Lodz ghetto in Poland. I think I would read this to Carson to introduce the subject matter to him in a pretty benign, but still informative, way. It's amazing, in a horrible way, the things people have had to endure.

I've read a lot of WWII books but this one, written in the voice of a girl who spent 6 years (ages 4-10) in the Lodz ghetto really stands out. It's so beautifully and simply written and is a tribute to her brave father and others who risked so much to protect the children. As always, I am inspired by the stories of survival in such horrifying circumstances. I love the visual of the adults encircling the children ❤
