In light of what's currently going on in the world, this story hit home in a slightly more realistic way, as sometimes history has a way of repeating itself. Gerta and her family live in East Germany during the Cold War and a wall went over seemingly overnight.
The character loyalty, ingenuity, and sacrifice made an inspiring impact on me and it was heartening to watch the story unfold. I thought this gave a good feel for how life was at this time in history. ...more

This book is about a German family that is separated when the Berlin wall goes up. It's mostly about Gerta, who is 12 when most of the book takes place. It's a simple story, but very gripping. 😬 This was stressful the whole book, but what a story!

I've read so much about when World War II was happening that it was nice to read about history after the war. I would have enjoyed more details about life on the other side of the wall, but understand why it wasn't given. I found the book a little slow and annoying in the beginning. I did enjoy the mystery part of the story line, and as the story picked up and the suspense was there, I wanted to keep reading to figure out what would happen next.

Another Cold war Historical fiction. This one was geared more for YA's but it was very good. I would highly recommend reading it even for adults. It really showed the depth of the trials faced by those stuck behind the Iron Curtain.
