In light of what's currently going on in the world, this story hit home in a slightly more realistic way, as sometimes history has a way of repeating itself. Gerta and her family live in East Germany during the Cold War and a wall went over seemingly overnight.

The character loyalty, ingenuity, and sacrifice made an inspiring impact on me and it was heartening to watch the story unfold. I thought this gave a good feel for how life was at this time in history.

This book is about a German family that is separated when the Berlin wall goes up. It's mostly about Gerta, who is 12 when most of the book takes place. It's a simple story, but very gripping. I like Gerta's bravery and ingenuity. The different family members and friends react differently to their situation, and all of their feelings are understandable. I have nothing negative to say about this book, it was enjoyable, intelligent, well written with great story arcs that kept me on the edge of my seat but in an inspiring way.

I’ve had this historical fiction books on my list to read for quite a while, and don’t remember where the recommendation came from. I didn’t even realize until I was reading the book that it was written for a younger reader. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. A story set during the first years of the Berlin Wall about a family separated by its borders and their efforts to reunite, it makes a great living history book. It was gripping and suspenseful, and I couldn’t put it down until it was o ...more

I've read so much about when World War II was happening that it was nice to read about history after the war. I would have enjoyed more details about life on the other side of the wall, but understand why it wasn't given. I found the book a little slow and annoying in the beginning. I did enjoy the mystery part of the story line, and as the story picked up and the suspense was there, I wanted to keep reading to figure out what would happen next. ...more

Another Cold war Historical fiction. This one was geared more for YA's but it was very good. I would highly recommend reading it even for adults. It really showed the depth of the trials faced by those stuck behind the Iron Curtain. ...more
