While this book was a little unbelievable at times, it was also intriguing, kept me listening when I should have been doing other things, and made me research and learn. It is sad how little I knew about the Berlin Wall, but my kids are not so uneducated. I started listening to this audiobook and now they are all listening. I have nothing negative to say about this book, it was enjoyable, intelligent, well written with great story arcs that kept me on the edge of my seat but in an inspiring way.
Wow, I haven't devoured a book like this in a long time. The story grabbed me from the very beginning and I could hardly look away. I love historical fiction and I've always been fascinated by this time period (the Berlin Wall/Cold War era). This was juvenile fiction, but I am glad it was. The voice of the main character (a 12-year-old girl) was so fresh, innocent, and real to me. Everyone wants to be free! Excellent story, loved Gerta’s spunky personality. Very suspenseful and great for middle grades.
I really liked this book. I remember seeing the Berlin Wall come down and how amazing it seemed to everyone.
I love good historical fiction, especially ones that make me want to learn more about the subject. I can't imagine how it felt watching the Berlin Wall go up. But to know you had family on the other side would be devastating. Great read!
