2018: Reread this since I hardly remembered the book at all. I listened to most of it on audio, and it was charming and enjoyable, though I think it's better on paper -- I'm less distracted.

2009: This feels like the first book I’ve actually finished in, well, ages. I think that says something right there, don’t you? It’s readable, it’s engaging, it’s light without being fluffy. And it probably helps that this type of book is right up my alley. Here are some of the reasons I loved this book:

Entertaining and educational. The story is told through letters written mostly to and from English author Juliet Ashton, between January 8th and September 17th, 1946. All the people involved are trying to put their lives back together after the devastation and horrors of WWII. When Juliet receives a letter from Dawsey, a resident of Guernsey Island in the English Channel, she begins a correspondence with him and his friends. We learn of the 5 year German occupation of the island and what happene ...more

Book Club read.
I loved this book. I was initially turned off by the title and the first 40 pages, but then I got used to the writing style and fell in love with all the characters. I was really moved and inspired by the people during the WWII occupation of the English Channel islands. I didn't want to put this book down.

My biggest complaint is the title. If it is fictional history, can't the author come up with a better name for the society? If the author felt the society name was great, change

It took me a while to get into this book, but I am SO glad I stuck with it. I cried, I laughed, and I will remember this story. The story of the people of Guernsey during WWII and how they started a literary society to cover an unlawful event (an act deemed a criminal offense by the Nazi soldiers). A story that reinforces that people are good, and that together we can survive the worst of times. Also, to stand up for what I believe, even if it means losing everything. I highly recommend this boo ...more

This was close to a 5 for me, but not quite. I really do reserve the 5's for books that change me somehow. I really did love this story--I loved the history intertwined as a novel. The characters were fabulous, it was simply a very enjoyable book. ...more

An easy read. I enjoyed comparing the main male character (who marries Juliet) to the male lead of No. 1 Ladies' Detective series (who marries Mma Ramotswe). Both are strong, silent types! ...more

I had a hard time starting this book. It is written in letters and it takes a few pages to get used to it, but once you do, you hardly notice that it is written in letters. I learned about a part of WW2 that I didn't know about and I got invested in the characters and their stories. I liked it and would recommend it to others :) ...more

This is a charming book with fantastic characters. I love books written in letter form. It talks about WWII atrocities, but focuses on courageous acts of charity and how people found hope and healing afterward.
