The family sees much promise in the smart Maisie and offers to fund her education. WWI breaks out and Maisie feels called to volunteer. This is not your typically cozy mystery. Definitely more novel than mystery, Maisie Dobbs sounds fluffier than it really is. I was impressed at how Winspear was able with a few deft strokes to conjure up some real emotion in describing just a few of the horrors of The Great War. I was moved to tears at her description of a man saying farewell to his soldier son being careful not to show emotion until his son departed on the train and then he allowed himself to sob into the fur of his son's dog.
